Canada - A Good Role Model For Health Care In The United States ??

Is Canada a good model for health care here in the United States?

You be the judge.

Even in Canada Health care costs have reached the ?tipping point?.

Recent research indicates the cold , hard economic reality that even in Canada with its informal subsidizes of defense costs by the good old USA is having trouble to fund its sc called all inclusive health care system that many liberal Americans beg to copy without full and thorough investigation.

Up in our ?Neighbor to the North? Canadians are reaching the limit of both what taxpayers can afford to pay as well as reduced access to health care and ever longer waiting times.

Of course there is only so much money in the pot and other essential social services are seeing funding cuts.

It is generally not appreciated that Canadians have almost had an emergency escape valve of the option of ?Going South ?if things get rough or too slow in their medical treatments.

The humorous part according to Las Vegas based health care analyst M. Labovitch is that the people with the power and influence in Canada don?t publicize or push for changes when things are hard as they have automatically used this southern option which what they consider is both higher quality and speedier medical treatment.

Indeed Labovitch notes from Vegas that the situation is so apparent and flagrant that when high profile Canadian leaders and politicians and their families have serious illnesses that need treatment the news reports always seem to be from prominent American hospitals. Canadians it seems don?t notice this two state solution or are immune and shell shocked already.

To support this data a prominent Canadian think tank ?The Fraser Institute? corroborated this information with a recent study.

Using actual Canadian government Statistics Canada data in its current report The Fraser Institute report notes that data on the most recent five year trends that public health care spending in every one of the ten Canadian provinces continues to grow faster on average, than total revenues from all sources ? including the large Canadian federal government transfers of funds from the wealthy provinces of Ontario in the industrial heartland , British Columbia (B.C.) with its mineral and forestry industries and Alberta with its oil wealth . These Canadian Federal Government fund transfers serve to transfer funds from the wealthier ?Have? provinces to the less fortunate ?Have Not? provinces in the hope of standardizing living standards and health care service levels across the country.

Health care in Canada is taking an ever increasing share of all revenues over time, leaving proportionately less money for everything else.

Public health care spending in six of the ten provinces is on pace to consume more than half of total revenues by the year 2020 , two thirds by the year 2035 and all of the provincial revenues by 2050.

And even this analysis?s the Institute notes is being generous with assumptions.

Projections of future revenue growth are actually overestimated because in many of the provinces recent growth revenue is a result of increasing tax burdens.

Canadians pay to start with a national federal tax (G.S.T.) of 7 % in addition of provincial sales taxes which range from zero provincial sales taxes in oil rich Alberta of which the US are the main consumers to almost 11 % in Prince Edward Island.

And in addition there are a myriad of hidden and incidental taxes. This is in addition as has been noted to the defense costs of Canada being subsidized by us here in the states.

There is only so much money in Canadian?s pockets and they will have to make choices for a lower standard of their living personally or higher taxes. In addition Canada is currently booming with oil, mineral and lumber sales. What happens if this slows down?

Is the Canadian health care system sustainable? Should it be the model for us here in the United States? You be the judge.

Animals As Pets - A Healthy Choice

Animals as pets, seems a silly notion to me. The only animals I've really kept as pets would be fish. And many animal lovers who have pets, would probably disagree with me as to the classification of fish as pets. Whatever. While I enjoy other peoples animal pets, I'm sure none of them would classify me as an animal lover. A recent turn of events may however have a long term effect on my relationship with animals. Having recently caved to our children's long term lobbying efforts to have a family dog as a pet, it appears that I will be sharing my home with an animal of the non-aquatic variety very soon.

Stress Out The Dogs

The thought of sharing my domicile with an animal has me a little stressed out. However, that should be short lived, as according to many experts living with an animal is supposed to help relieve stress in humans. Not exactly sure why that is. Perhaps having a creature you can speak your mind to, that has no recourse but to agree with you? Sometimes us human animals just need someone to listen, and agree with everything we say. Maybe the constant reminder of an animal who has no control over what they eat, where they sleep, how they play, and what goofy clothes they wear, makes people realize that maybe things aren't so bad for them. Could be worse, you could be a dog.

First Puppy Wins US Open

Apparently exercise is supposed to be another benefit of keeping an animal in the house. Taking them out for walks, playing catch, and bending over to pick up dogie poo all seem wonderful. Really? I tend to like my exercise to be more of the competitive variety. Any chance rover can learn to pick up a tennis racquet? Animals playing sports? Now that's got potential.

Animals As People Magnets

Need to find some new friends? Get an animal. Your guaranteed to meet other animal lovers, as they all walk their dogs / cats / hamsters through the park. Not so sure these are the best kind of people for me to meet though. Never have been much of an animal lover, so I'm not to sure how I'd fit in with this group. Those people with the big nasty attack dogs always scare me a little. It's not so much the animal I worry about however, it's really the owners that concern me. What would posses someone to want to own an animal that could kill you while you sleep is truly beyond me.

Animal Therapist

Apparently animals make great therapists. Hmm, maybe they meant animals are good therapy. That whole unconditional love and admiration thing. Not like the animals have much choice. Seems like a pretty one sided relationship to me. Well hopefully all the animal experts are right and there is some good (therapeutic or otherwise) to living with animals. I hope so, otherwise I may soon be the one in need of a therapist. Preferably a human one.

Health And Fitness Essentials ? The Cardio-Vascular Workout.

To accomplish a good cardio-vascular workout all you really need is a good pair of running shoes. Most cardio-vascular exercise needs little or no third party apparatus to help you accomplish your routine. Running, dancing, walking can all be done with no equipment (well, if dancing, then maybe some music would help). Other forms of cardio are step, circuit training, bike riding, swimming, aerobics and more...

With most exercise you should always remember to warm up first and cool down afterwards. This means gently stretching and moving your muscles to start off with. Suddenly moving into full exercise without building up first will cause problems such as stiffness and cramps. Ease yourself into it. Then after exercise, the cool down is basically gently moving the muscles and joints to stretch and relax, as your body returns to its normal pace.

Running:

Make sure you have a good pair of running shoes. The technology put into these shoes nowadays is highly researched and designed to reduce shock to the feet, ankles, legs and back. So don't skimp on these - you get what you pay for.

Before you start your run, be sure to warm up first. Start with a brisk walk ensuring you move your arms vigorously gradually breaking into a slow jog. It is better to run at a speed to which you can still converse. If you find yourself losing breath, slow your pace down until you've recovered. If you are a novice runner try running and walking, until you can hold your run for 15 minutes.

Now increase the length and time of your run by a couple of minutes every other time you hit the road or treadmill, until you can run for 30 minutes without stopping. Try to increase your run time by 10% each week, remember not to over do it and don?t forget to warm down at the end of each by slowing down gradually. When your run is complete stretch your legs for 30 seconds per muscle, hamstring, calf and thigh.

Cycling:

Cycling is one of the best ways to get a good cardio-vascular workout.

First of all, if you are riding on the roads safety is paramount, always use the appropriate safety equipment when road riding. You can stay fit by riding a bike to work, most people work within a five mile radius of there place of work, which is a perfect distance for a bike ride.

Exercise bikes can be used in a variety of ways, general riding for specified length of time, this is like going for a bike ride with out the dangers of road riding and the weather. Warm up riding you can use an exercise bike for warming up the legs before a leg workout. Also exercise bike classes, these classes are taken by an instructor, who will put you through various levels of pace, quite like a circuit training exercise with a bike.

You may find it surprising to find that riding a bike five miles 3 times per week will improve your heart rate, your posture, skin and weight control. Some even say that riding and running are great ways of relieving stress.

Swimming:

One of the best ways to firm up and trim your body down. Due to the resistance the water has on the body swimming involves all the major muscle groups this allows the body to burn up to 20% more calories than swimming through air. Swimming a few lengths per day will keep you fit and give you an excellent workout. Swimming also has less impact on the joints than say, running.

If you wish to take your swim a little further try picking up the pace of your swim, you can work up to a great aerobic exercise and give your body an excellent workout.

Start off by swimming 1-2 lengths at a time resting between sets if necessary, after you have swam ten lengths call it a day. The next day repeat the process until you can swim five lengths without a break. Progress to ten lengths in by adding an extra length each time you return.

You can put together your own cardio raining routing in the gym, if you have a problem with this then the staff on hand will write one for you and show you how to achieve your goal. Try to make your cardio last between an hour and an hour and a half. A good start point for cardio is always a run.

This cardio workout will work for a person of medium fitness, however adjust the times and pace according to your fitness levels.

1. Run at a light pace for 20 minutes, start off at a walking pace and gradually move to a run, this helps you get warmed up and the blood pumping.

2. Rowing machine- set the rowing machine for a countdown time of 15 minutes or keep a check on your watch or the clock. Start off with a slow rowing motion to get the pace up, maintain this steady pace throughout the full 13 minutes and use the 2 minutes to slow the pace down.

3. Move immediately on to exercise bike take a stead paced ride for 12 minutes with a sprint finish for the remaining 3 minutes.

4. After the exercise bike move directly on to the step climber for a period of 15 minutes climbing on a light level to get the legs going. Try to move at a swift pace for the full 15 minutes as this is the last of the leg work you will be doing.

5. When you have completed the step climber, move onto the abs bench for some crunches. 4 sets of crunches to failure is your target for this exercise. Try twisting your body and touching your left knee with your right elbow and vice versa.

6. The last exercise in this quick cardio workout is the leg raise apparatus. Bring your knees up to your chest for 3-4 sets for as many reps as possible (failure)

After the completion of this cardio workout, remember to do a full warm down by stretching the muscles. The full workout should take you around 1 hour 20 minutes.

Proteins. . . and your health.

Really little is scientifically know about proteins and your health. This will endeavor to bring you up to date with this little knowledge; the basics of what you need to know about proteins.

Proteins make up 15% of your mass. Most of your body is constructed from protein molecules e.g. muscles, cartilage, ligaments, skin and hair are mainly protein. Haemoglobin, hormones, antibodies, enzymes are all proteins.

Without water, 75% of your weight is protein. Your body is made up of at least 10,000 different kinds of proteins. All proteins are made up of 22 basic building blocks of proteins called amino acids. What makes the thousands of different types of protein is that each type of protein in the body has a different sequence and structure of the 22 amino acids. This different sequences and structures assist in performing different yet specific functions in the body.

Proteins and its Function

Infact, proteins serve two main purposes in the body
1) Structural e.g. keratin in hair, collagen in muscles etc.
2) Functional e.g. enzymes, hormones etc.

Proteins are macro molecules ie large molecules and polymers i.e. long chain of amino acids. Infact every function of the living cell depends on proteins.

A) Motion- Depends on contractile proteins e.g muscles

B) Most biochemical reactions depend on organic catalysts i.e. enzymes e.g. amylase.

C) Structure of the cell has proteins e.g. in cell membrane.

D) Transport of body constituents depend on protein e.g. oxygen, and carbon dioxide transport by haemoglobin.

The body does not store amino acids like carbohydrates and fats; therefore it requires a new supply of amino acids everyday to make new body proteins. And since your body cells are dying everyday, they need to be replenished everyday.

If the body doesn't get all the amino acids to build body proteins, it digests itself to provide that missing amino acid.

When we eat protein foods, the polypeptide chain are generally broken in the digestive tract individual amino acids are absorbed in the blood stream. The body then recombines these amino acids into proteins necessary in your body for structural and other function.

Dietary sources of protein include:- chicken, fish, tuna fish, beef steak, cottage cheese, split peas, milk, kidney beans. Lack of proteins can have severe consequences. It results in growth failure, loss of muscle mass, decreased immunity, weakening of the heart and the respiratory system and if prolonged, death.

The digestion of protein releases acids in the body that are neutralized with calcium and other buffering agents in the blood. Generally, eating a lot of protein doesn't harm the heart and it seems to keep it healthier. But it requires lots of calcium. If no enough calcium is present in the diet then it is pulled from the bones. So long term high protein diet could weaken bones.

Protein in cow milk may also play part in developing Type 1 Diabetes. That is why cow milk is not recommended for infants. But later in life this milk protein doesn't seem to adversely effect Type 2 Diabetes.

Complete Proteins

Some proteins we eat have all the essential amino acids we require from our diet. These are called complete proteins. Generally, animal proteins tend to be complete. Fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts contain incomplete proteins that is, they lack in at least one of the essential amino acids.

Your body requires all this essential amino acids. Otherwise it will break down body tissue, to get the missing amino acids. To avoid this vegetarians require eating plant proteins from a number of different sources. It is also advisable to supplement with a complete protein supplement.

On the other hand, complete proteins sources mostly found in animal proteins come with other undesirables e.g. fat. To avoid this, eat beef from the leanest cuts. Fish and poultry are good alternative.

Little is really known about proteins and health scientifically. It has not been researched thoroughly as fats and vitamins. But it is catching up. Basically it is known every adult needs a minimum of one gram of protein per every kilogramme of body weight per day to keep from slowly breaking down their own tissue. Athletes require more.
